I met the legendary Opera tenor Placido Domingo after his performance

of 'Simon Boccanegra' at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London

in July 2010

I painted the portrait in 2007 and tried to meet Placido when he appeared at the Royal Opera House then but I missed him when he came out.

I waited another 3 years for him to return and was delighted when I read he would appear again in July 2010.

I wrote to The Royal Opera House and told them about my painting.

They were impressed with my portrait and very kindly arranged for me to meet Placido Domingo after his performance.

When I arrived, to my surprise I was invited to have a private meeting with Placido in his dressing room.

Just minutes after coming off stage Placido greeted me, still in costume, and although I was quite nervous at being in the dressing room of one of the greatest singers of all time, he made me feel very welcome and was very warm hearted and friendly. When he saw my painting he said "Wow you rock!" and showed it to his wife who was there also.

He kindly wrote on my painting:

'To Paul with best wishes, Thank you! Placido Domingo',

and posed for a photo with me. A very special moment I shall treasure forever.
